Theme Five: Cause and Effect

Write an essay of at least five paragraphs, using cause and effect as the primary rhetorical mode. Choose from the following topics for your paper:

1. Why we watch television (causes), or the results (effects) of television on us. Do only one of these two.

2. What goes into a good education or the effects of one. Choose one or the other, not both.

3. The influence of some art form (movies, painting, books, video games) on our lives.

4. Why we vote (causes) or don’t vote.

5. Why people exercise.

6. The effects of a good or bad teacher or coach on your life.

7. The effects of divorce.

8. The effects of traveling abroad.

9. Why we drink, smoke, or overeat.

10. Effects of a standardized education (from class discussion).

Things to remember:

1. Your essay should be at least five paragraphs in length.

2. Make sure that the larger point of your cause and effect is evident from the introduction. Articulate why it is important other than for its own sake.

3. Make sure that your paragraphs follow a logical progression. Remember our example with education, moving from students to teachers to the system.

4. Make sure that you consider logic. Avoid hasty generalizations and post hoc fallacies.

If you do not have a complete draft next time (at least five paragraphs, double spaced), do not come to class.
